The Sympathizer

Wow. What a book. I wish I could have read it prior to visiting Vietnam, because it would have given me a deeper understanding of the war The Sympathizer is about: The Vietnam War.

Nguyen does a masterful job of describing a man tortured by his love for country, and the choices that he makes in the name of that love. He’s haunted by the brutality that his actions (and inactions) have wrought.

The Sympathizer dives headfirst into heavy topics like the value of independence and freedom, all while maintaining a gripping plot.

Not sure if this is a plus for those of you thinking about reading The Sympathizer, but it also has an uncomfortable torture scene that forces you to empathize with the insanity brought on by the trauma.

Definitely recommended for anyone with an interest in the Vietnam War, or even anyone interested in a fast paced story that explores human nature.
