Bad Blood

Bad Blood explores the rise and fall of the biotech startup Theranos.

It details the absurd antics of a Silicon Valley darling that oversold her product and the ineptitude, indifference, and inability to make change that led to Theranos’ implosion.

Theranos’ founder, Elizabeth Holmes, is put under the microscope in Bad Blood, and what’s on the slide is fascinating. On one level, you begin to understand how she came to make the poor choices she did, on another, you’re disgusted that she could make them, and on yet another you’re impressed that she could execute on those choices and come out ahead.

The rest of the cast isn’t quite as interesting, but fleshes out the corporate negligence that enabled Holmes to put Theranos in the gutter (or to keep it in the spotlight, depending on how you view it).

All in all, enjoyable read that acts as a cautionary tale for believing in startups that seem too good to be true.
